Curriculum Map – English
KS3 (Theory and Practice)
Overview
Pupils in KS3 are taught the English Primary National Curriculum at the level that they are working on. Each half term is assigned an English topic and teachers plan and deliver their lessons around this topic but at a level that is appropriate for the needs of their class.
Teachers plan for pupils to have a secure knowledge of a skill before moving on to a more advanced skill to ensure that gaps in knowledge and understanding are not created and that pupils are confident before moving on. Pupils cover a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts across the 3-year rolling program.
Non-Fiction Modules
The long-term plans are designed to ensure whole school coverage of non-fiction genres/text types (report, inform, persuade, instruct). Modules have been designed to take account of any mention of specific text types in the English Reading Comprehension, and Writing Composition, Programmes of Study.
Fiction modules
As the children progress through the rolling programme, narrative units vary their focus e.g., from plot, to other aspects of narrative writing, such as characterisation and creating atmosphere. The curriculum places emphasis on ‘myths and fairy stories’ and ‘traditional tales’ and this is reflected in the narrative module titles.
Poetry
Three aspects of poetry are addressed in each year group: language, structure, and context. Opportunities for performance and recital should occur regularly throughout the year.
Literacy
Lessons follow the primary national curriculum guidance for writing composition, handwriting, and spelling and grammar. Content that pupils are expected to learn, and use will be taught appropriately for each pupil as they progress through school. It is expected that pupils will use the skills they learn in their literacy lesson in cross curricular subjects to show that they are embedded and can be used in a range of situations. Reading and comprehension will be taught alongside this in guided reading and phonics sessions throughout the week. Again, pupils will be expected to use these skills in a range of situations around school to show that they have leant them in depth.
